Old Age, My Friend
Artist Statement
What does getting old look like? What does it feel like? My investigation explores the internal and external transformations that are inevitable with aging and the passage of time. My work is self-portraiture as I reflect on myself in childhood, teenage years, and old age. I used color pencil and photography to intersect the seen with the unseen: the physical and metaphysical changes that time marks. This process involved using childhood photographs as well as photographing myself and my mother, who much of my inspiration derives from and in a sense represents an older version of myself. Working closely with her sparked many discussions about getting older and her perspective on aging which helped guide my investigation. “Thread of Life” is the catalyst for my ideas because it best connects past, present, and future versions of myself together through a thin, red string - a motif throughout my work. Another motif I examine are cherry blossoms. Because they are only in bloom for a short amount of time, the cherry blossoms represent the ephemeral nature of life, beauty, and youth. My work aims for an acceptance of a natural cycle of life: getting older.
